In most cases, these pegs are made of (steamed) beech wood. The shape of the material makes them ideally suited for use at the beach, in the dunes and (especially) on swampy ground such as along rivers.

Putting these pegs in putty or primer (preferably water-based in view of the environment!) extends their life considerably.
