DEET is the strongest insect repellent for the skin. DEET is the abbreviation of the active ingredient N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (CAS no 134-62 -3). Care Plus Deet is effective against house mosquitoes (Culex species) and mosquitoes that can cause malaria (Anopheles species) and yellow fever ( Aedes species). Care Plus Deet is additionally effective against ticks (Ixodes species) that can cause Lyme disease and Tick-borne encephalitis. DEET is advised for destinations with malaria and yellow fever risk.
Our Care Plus® Anti-Insect Deet products are available in concentrations of 30%, 40% and 50%. The percentage determines the duration of action. Young children put products in their mouths while exploring their surroundings without being aware of the possible dangers. Since 2012, we have therefore been adding the odourless and bitter Bitrex® to our DEET products. Bitrex reduces the chance of swallowing the insect repellent. Care Plus Anti-Insect Deet was rated good by the German Stiftung Warentest in 2004 (50% lotion), in 2010 (50% lotion) and in 2013 (40% spray). Care Plus® Anti-Insect Deet was tested positively by the Dutch Consumer Association in 2005 (30% gel) and in 2013 (40% spray).
Care Plus Deet is registered by Tropenzorg B.V. with the local government (EU-BPR) and meets all requirements regarding safety and effectiveness in use provided the product is used as prescribed. The availability of DEET depends on local regulations Biocides.
Warning! DEET corrodes certain materials. Therefore, avoid contact with plastics and varnished surfaces, such as spectacle frames, cameras and tabletops. We advise vulnerable groups such as pregnant or breastfeeding women and children under 13 not to use DEET. In that case, choose Care Plus Anti-Insect Natural based on lemon-eucalyptus extract (Citriodiol). This strong insect repellent can already be used on children from 3 months of age.
