From lace-making to making your own beer, during the annual Craft Weekend you can attend craft and arts demonstrations here and there in the Waasland region. The offer is huge so you would do well to plan your choice and route in advance. Tip: do it with a pair of walking shoes or by bike and discover the unique forests, polders and villages the region has to offer.
So in Sinaai, you could go for a bushcraft introduction offered by BCL members. At first sight an oddity, because bushcraft, is that really an art? Sure it is, namely the art of surviving in and with nature! As soon as you see what it involves ... you can safely call it a craft.
Bushcraft covers the techniques you need to live in nature for a long time. This by using as much natural material as you can find at the time. Your equipment consists of only the minimum, for example an emergency kit, a pocket knife and a flint. Possibly supplemented with MacGyver-like things like steel wool, Vaseline, old batteries ... which, unfortunately, you can also find as rubbish in nature these days. But in the hands of an experienced bushcrafter, these can work wonders!
In a nutshell, bushcraft is a purer form of survival. This is because in survival you can use modern means without any restrictions to survive in extreme conditions and help you get back to civilisation quickly.
Providing four basic needs is the guiding principle in bushcraft. In the right order, they are shelter, fire, water and food. This order is important because if you provide shelter first, then you can keep wood dry in it. From dry wood you can then make a fire on which you can boil water to purify it and so on.On the other hand, this order also gives you the best physical protection against the elements. Food, for instance, you can miss a lot longer than water.
The bushcraft introduction took place under a beautiful parachute encampment. Various techniques were demonstrated and you could immediately start making your own fire with a flint or even a firebow. Tips and tricks poured in and the enthusiasm of the BCL members made young and old alike eager for adventure!
Did you miss this? No problem, you can also attend the bushcraft introduction in Sinaai during the 2019 Craft Weekend.
